We are working on a project to transform a derelict garage site into a courtyard full of environmentally sustainable features, bio-diverse plants and a storage facility for Walthamstow Tool Lending Library
William Morris Big Local has been working on the project since 2021 alongside residents of William Morris Close and Holmes Avenue after years of the site being used as a dumping ground. After months of talks and input from the community Waltham Forest Council were persuaded to demolish the derelict garages, clear the site and make it ready for the intended courtyard project. We have now secured a lease for the site and have been working with Matter Architecture on final proposals to submit to the planning department.
Next steps
Despite good progress there is still lots to be done with planning permission to be sought followed by the build itself. We need to fundraise for the project whilst also maintaining the existing site which has been set up with temporary flower beds. If you think you could help in any way and join an existing group of residents involved please get in touch! In 2024 we need help:
- Maintaining the existing site
- Securing planning permission
- Fundraising for the new courtyard
- Organising events and activities on William Morris Close to keep people up to date with developments and grow the number of volunteers.
Concept drawings & Draft Designs
In 2021 Matter Architecture provided us with some pro bono work and also brought in architect students from the University of East London (UEL) to help get early ideas together. Four community workshops were held where input from neighbours was gathered and the building of some temporary structures for the site perimeter.
In 2023 we instructed Matter Architecture to work on draft designs with further input from the community. In 2024 they will be assisting us through the final design stage and planning permission. You can view the designs so far on the links below:
