Walthamstow Tool Library (WTL) is a tool lending library at 2a Priory Court with a special focus on garden and DIY tools and the mission to make tools both accessible and affordable, while reducing the need to purchase new tools and consequently our impact on the environment.

With more than 150 tools from cordless drills to pressure washers and even an apple press, Tool Library membership is a must for any DIY-er or gardener. Friendly staff and volunteers host regular how-to workshops and events too. The project was developed by residents of William Morris Big Local, made possible by Big Local funding and is run for the community by Forest Recycling Project.

What impact has this project had on the community?

In 2021 we:

  • Had 150 members
  • Had 614 loans of tools thereby saving people money, clutter and avoiding unnecessary waste from buying and throwing away unwanted tools.
  • 8 workshops and events with a total of 100 attendees and participants

The tool library has become a community hub with residents and community groups coming and going to borrow tools and learn from each other. It has also helped brighten up the surrounding area of Priory Court with a vibrant mural on the side of the building and the installation of planters and benches in the area. The library has supported residents plant up the area and take ownership of their communal outdoors spaces.

"Lovely place with nice people, great idea to help share tools, better to try before you buy."

"Love the Tool Library and consider it an asset to the area."

"Thank you for this great service! It’s perfect for those who need tools irregularly and it is better for the environment. I love the idea of sharing these resources as a community."

How can members of the community get involved?

Annual membership of the library starts from just £10 for unlimited borrowing of tools.

By joining you have access to over 150 tools as well as free workshops, tool sharpening and monthly gardening hints and tips. We also provide volunteer placements for those wishing to lend a hand or enhance their skills. 2022 will see an exciting programme of workshops being hosted at the Tool Library.
